I Will Trust in You!

Bible Verse:  Deuteronomy 34:1-12 1Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. There the LORD showed him the whole land-from Gilead to Dan, 2all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea, 3the Negev and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms, as far as Zoar. 4Then the LORD said to him, "This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, 'I will give it to your descendants.' I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it." 5And Moses the servant of the LORD died there in Moab, as the LORD had said. 6He buried him in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. 7Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone. 8The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the time of weeping and mourning was over. 9Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the LORD had commanded Moses. 10Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, 11who did all those signs and wonders the LORD sent him to do in Egypt-to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land. 12For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

Our bible reading today tells us the end of a story – a long 40-year story!  The Israelites, who were slaves in Egypt, leave with their leader Moses to go find the Promise Land.  They wander in the desert for 40 years and when they arrive at the Promise Land, who do you think gets to go in?  Or more to the point of this story, guess who does not get to go in? Moses, yup the guy who just spent 40 years leading them, fighting for them, advocating to God for them, does not get to enter the Promise Land.

A few points to ponder from our bible reading:

·         God shows Moses the Promise Land from the top of a nearby mountain

·         Moses dies after seeing it at the age of 120

·         God Himself buries Moses (think about how intimate and personal that is, just beautiful I think)

·         Since this time, no profit has risen like Moses

·         The Lord knew Moses face to face (Wow, pretty cool, right?)

·         Moses was not allowed to enter the Promised Land because he struck the rock twice instead of speaking to the rock as God had told him to (lack of faith)

Have you ever felt like God brought you up to something you’ve wanted and worked for but then didn’t let you have it?

Ever since High School, I have wanted a degree in Psychology.  When I was deciding on a path for college, that is what I wanted to do, get a degree in Psychology.  But I didn’t think I was smart enough to do that, so I ended up getting a degree in Accounting, an area I had very little to no interest in, because, somehow, I convinced myself that would be easier!  Boy was I wrong, if I had only trusted God to do what he promised, which is making a way for us to follow our hearts and to use the gifting’s He put inside of us to further His kingdom.

Several times since getting a degree in Accounting, I have considered going back to school and getting my degree in Psychology.  Today, I am again at a crossroad in my life and career. And guess what? That flame in my heart, that ache in my soul, is as strong and as certain as it was 37 years ago!

This degree has become my promise land – I have literally been wandering the dessert for 37 years – it will take me 3 years to complete my Masters in Psychology.  Are you seeing where we are going with this?  37+3=40 years!!!

In our worship song for today, Trust in You by Laura Daigle, she sings about letting go of our dreams, setting them at the feet of Jesus.  She sings that when the mountains don’t move, the waters don’t part and the answers don’t come, we will still trust in God!

Am I a Joshua (the one anointed by Moses to lead them into the Promise Land) or am I Moses?  Will God take me to the top of the mountain and show me my Promise Land from afar or will I walk into the promise land?

I have laid this dream down at the feet of Jesus, I have prayed boldly for God to move the mountain and part the sea and let me get a Psychology degree! Today, I stepped out in faith and enrolled in college and I am trusting God in all of this! So grateful that we live on this side of the cross, where our sins of disbelieve and fear are forgiven and grace and mercy is extended.

Heavenly Father, in all things be our life and breath – we want what you want and nothing less!  We boldly pray for mountains to be moved, for seas to part and for your will to be done in our lives!  Amen
