"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"
Peter answered, "You are the Messiah." Mark 8:29 NIV
Song: Among The Thirsty - Who You Say I Am (Acoustic)By clicking the above song title, you will be directed to a video of our worship song for today. Hope you enjoy this song selected specifically to go along with our devotion!
Take
a few minutes and write down what names or attributes that come to your mind
when you answer for yourself “Who do you say I am?”
Jesus
is the center of our Christian faith.
Knowing about Christ is essential to our faith. It is also equally important for that
knowledge to be personal. Who do you say
I am? Our relationship to Christ is tied
to our human condition, redemption and salvation.
I
once went to a church where the different names and titles for God were painted
on the wall, it was like a border at the top of wall and it encompassed the
whole sanctuary. It was so beautiful to
see all the names and titles of God and to think about how intertwined His character
was in my life, in my day, in my family and in who I was. I think I spent the whole service just
reading these names and meditating on the beauty of who God was. I could not
tell you where that church was, who I was there with or what the service was
even about, but I can still visualize the names of God painted on that wall,
going all around the large sanctuary in an almost never ending, continuous
circle. I still remember how I felt,
being surrounded by God and His presences that morning.
Now, let’s take that question of who do you say I am and turn it around. Who do you say I am? Ok, the words are the same and in the same order, but let’s ask God, who does He say’s we are? No, I am not going to ask you to write down your version of who you think you are or even who you think God thinks you are. We are going to look to scriptures for that!
Here
is a small list of who God says we are:
Child of God – John 1:12
Friend of Jesus – John 15:15
Justified and redeemed – Romans 3:24
Accepted – Romans 15:7
New – 2 Corinthians 5:17
Heir – Galatians 4:7
Chosen – Ephesians 1:4
His workmanship – Ephesians 2:10
Citizen of heaven – Philippians 3:20
In
our worship song for today they sing “Ever since the day I ran into your grace
you called me righteous, you call me yours, no longer guilty….we are
re-written, spoken for, because of who you say we are.” I love the line that says we are
re-written! I am so glad that I can live
out the story that God has written for me and that I am not who the world says
I am, but I am, now and forever, who God says I am!
How has your life changed since the day you ran into God’s grace and He called you His?
Heavenly Father, we thank
you for being the author of our stories, that you have re-written our lives. We thank you for the peace of knowing that we
are spoken for! Help us to go out into
all the world and tell others who you are.
Help us to be brave enough to tell others who God says we are and to
spread the love of your character to others.
Amen
