The First Birth Announcement - Third week of Advent

Bible Verse: “When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.  So, they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.  When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.  But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.  The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.”  - Luke 2:16-20

Today is the third week of Advent.  If we were lighting the candles on a wreath, we would be lighting the only pink candle.  This week is the Shepherd’s Candle.  Pink represents joy and it represents a shift in our hearts from repentance to rejoicing as we anticipate the coming of the messiah.

For those of you who have children, did you send out birth announcements?  Our oldest son, Kyle, was born the week before Christmas.  Our birth announcement said, “As we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, will you join us in celebrating the birth of our son Kyle?”  That made me think of the first birth announcement in the bible (or at least I think it was the first).  The angels appearing to the shepherds.

I have always wondered why the shepherds?  Shepherds were the common folks of the day, nothing flashy or special about them.  But then I realized that fit right in with everything else about the birth of Jesus.  His parents, Mary and Joseph, were common folks, nothing about them sticks out as particularly special.  He was born in Bethlehem, a sleepy little town of no major importance.  And finally, there is Jesus first baby bed…. a manger!

After the shepherds heard the news what did they do next?  They hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and the new born King!  Then they spread the word about what they had been told about this child, and all who heard it were amazed!

When our boys were born we had many visitors at the hospital and our family and friends joined us in celebration of new life.  The word spread among our friends and family of our good news.  And, as a new mom, I treasured up all of this and pondered it in my heart!

This first birth announcement, the announcement of our King and Savior, was as it had been prophesized and word spread of the good news.  So, this third week of Advent, we light the candle of joy and our anticipation continues to mount as we quiet our hearts and minds to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.

Heavenly Father, we rejoice and praise you that you came into this world to save us from our sins and to give us a way to spend eternity in your presence.  We eagerly await Your second coming just as the shepherds awaited your first.  Be with us and encourage us as we share the gospel with others, that they too may come to know you.  Humbly we pray, Amen
